26days left of 2007 Plan Commission and BZA meetings tonight. 7pm
Plan Commission was very pleasant. Three groups spoke and they were all treated cordially and reasonably. The Thackers asked for a house on South Main to be rezoned so they could operate an antique business out of it. They will go to the Town Council next Tuesday for a ruling, but the Plan Commission felt it fell into the realm of the natural development as far as the current comprehensive plan is written.
Jeff Everman brought his request to operate a wrecker service and storage lot back to the table. The previous plan commission had already approved it, but due to a technicality, it had been rescinded. I think that was because he was not able to meet the deadline on his self proposed improvements. All of them have since been completed. In addition, he went before the BZA and they approved it, as well. Jim Steele threatened the board with legal ramifications, claiming he had spoken with an attorney indicating if they passed it, they would be in big trouble!! He used the reasoning of discrimination! Non exactly sure what legal definition of discrimination he was going for: age? race? religion? gender? sexual orientation?
The last request was from John Setty who wanted the concrete blocks that were blocking the end of the new street that goes back to the new funeral home removed. Mr. Acrea commented on how unsafe they were, since they had no lights or reflective material on them. With snow coming, it could be more probable that someone could run into them putting the town in jeopardy. The Plan Commission agreed that this was not a matter for their Board, but generally, they agreed the road blocks were not appropriate and directed them back to the Town Council for review/removal. None of the other roads in town have anything like this blocking access to properties behind it. Mr. Setty did not threaten to sue for discrimination.
All in all, Mr. Acrea and Mr. Lyon ran the meetings very well and the board members contributed in a positive and congenial manner. There was no yelling. Did I mention that John Davis was not present?
